Is Hemp CBD Different Than Marijuana CBD?
To start, let’s take a look at what hemp and marijuana are. While they have similarities, they are fundamentally different. Remember, CBD is cannabidiol, one of the many phytocannabinoids from the cannabis plant.
First, hemp from the cannabis sativa L. plant has a THC content of <0.3% of the dried weight of the flower. Second, marijuana from the cannabis sativa L. plant has a THC content of greater than or equal to 0.3% of the dried weight of the flower. That’s the big differentiator really. So both hemp and marijuana come from the Cannabis sativa plant with the primary difference being the percentage of THC found in the dried flowers.
So to cut to the chase, CBD from hemp is exactly the same as CBD from marijuana. CBD is a molecule. Where it’s derived from doesn’t matter. CBD is CBD. That also means that CBD from hemp will have the same effect as CBD from marijuana.
Okay, but will hemp CBD get me high? No, CBD itself will not get you high (intoxicated). In fact, the CBD from marijuana will not either. Typically though, CBD is found with other cannabinoids such at THC, CBG, CBN, etc. But if you’re using a hemp product, it should not get you high. Marijuana products certainly may, given their higher levels of THC (the intoxicating cannabinoid). See our post about CBD Facts for more information.
